Evaluating the impact on stroke care key performance metrics using same day emergency care and direct admissions to an acute stroke unit
Victoria Williams, John WilliamsBackground:
This article evaluates the implementation and impact of same day emergency care for stroke patients at one NHS trust.
Aim:
Using a retrospective quantitative design, to evaluate the impact of the stroke same day emegency care model on three individual time-critical stroke metrics and patient feedback.
Methods:
A retrospective quantitative design, analysing secondary Sentinel Stroke National Audit Programme data between January 2019 and December 2023, and friends and family test data between August 2021 and January 2024.
Results:
Testing demonstrated that implementation of the stroke same day emegency care model delivers significant benefits, with P values of <0.001 across all three time-critical measures examined. Positive trends were observed in national stroke audits and patient/family feedback following stroke same day emegency care implementation.
Conclusions:
This study demonstrates that the stroke same day emegency care model enhances time-critical interventions and improves patient experience. Early evaluations of the stroke same day emergency care model were positive. Further research is needed to assess long-term sustainability and scalability across NHS trusts, and impact on clinical outcomes.
