Background and aim

Dental caries remains the world’s most common chronic health condition. Dental caries is a progressive condition caused by imbalance between the remineralizing and the demineralizing factors. Various methods and materials were introduced as remineralizing agents for carious lesions. The present study aims to evaluate the effect of diode laser irradiation and nanohydroxyapatite (nHA) gel on remineralizing a demineralized enamel.

Materials and methods

Forty-eight freshly human extracted premolars were divided randomly into four groups. Initial enamel lesions were prepared in the teeth with 37% phosphoric acid for 2 h. Using DIAGNOdent pen to detect the artificially prepared demineralized enamel lesion before and after demineralization and once more after remineralization. Four experimental groups ( n = 12) were treated as follow, group 1: treated with nHA gel (10%) on the buccal surface for 4 min, group 2: irradiated with diode laser 940 nm (1 W, 10 s, 35.7 ) then nHA gel (10%) for 4 min, group 3: irradiated with diode laser 940 nm (1 W, 10 s, 35.7 ), group 4 served as an untreated control.

Results

A significant difference was observed between the tested groups ( P < 0.001). Analysis of pairwise comparisons showed that the combination of diode laser and nHA gel resulted in significantly higher values than all other groups, except for the nHA gel alone group ( P < 0.001). Additionally, both the diode aser and nHA gel when used individually exhibited a statistically significant increase compared to the controls ( P < 0.001).

Conclusion

Combination of diode laser irradiation then nHA gel application promotes the remineralization of artificial caries lesions.
