Evaluating Corrosion Behavior of Commercially Available Coolants
Saira Niaz, Ameeq FarooqLocalized pitting corrosion occurs in aluminum (Al) radiators, primarily in areas where breakdown of the oxide layer of Al happens due to the presence of chloride ions (Cl−) in the water. This study evaluates the corrosion resistance of commercially available coolants under different operating conditions. Potentiodynamic polarization tests were performed in the presence of Cl− ions at 30 °C (86 °F) and 80 °C (176 °F). Fourier transform infrared analysis confirmed that coolants B and C contain certain corrosion inhibitors that provide good corrosion resistance against Cl− attack. This work will be beneficial for the automotive industry, where corrosion failure of Al radiators remains a major challenge.
