Evaluating a Context-Aware Smart Home Prototype as Learning Media for Smart Green Building Education

Abstract

Smart home and green building technologies are increasingly relevant to energy efficiency, water conservation, security, and occupant comfort. However, integrated learning media that demonstrate these technologies in authentic educational settings remain limited, particularly in Indonesia. This study developed and evaluated a context-aware smart home prototype for use as learning media in smart green building education. Developed using the ADDIE framework, the prototype incorporated automation, Internet of Things (IoT)-based security, remote monitoring, automatic lighting and ventilation, greywater-supported irrigation, and a solar-tracking system. A qualitative feasibility assessment was conducted with 18 engineering students from Informatics Education, Building Engineering Education, and Mechanical Engineering Education through questionnaires and interviews. The findings indicate that students perceived the prototype positively in supporting their understanding of smart home functions and green building principles, particularly security, controllability, energy conservation, renewable-energy use, water efficiency, and comfort. The prototype may serve as a reference for designing hands-on learning modules, laboratory activities, and interdisciplinary curricula that connect IoT, automation, and sustainability. The findings may also inform institutional decisions on integrating smart green building competencies into engineering education. Further refinement, expert validation, and broader implementation are required to strengthen its pedagogical use and evaluate learning outcomes more systematically.
