Epidemiological Profile and Economic Impact of Surgical Treatment for Knee Dislocation/Fracture-Dislocation in the Brazilian Unified Health System (SUS) (2014–2024)
G.L. Silva, V.M. De Azevedo, C.E.M. ZamunerObjectives:
To analyze the epidemiological profile and economic impact of surgical treatment for knee dislocation and fracture-dislocation in the Brazilian Unified Health System (SUS).
Methods:
This ecological descriptive study used secondary aggregated data from the SUS Hospital Information System (SIH/SUS), corresponding to procedure 0408050683 (surgical treatment of knee dislocation/fracture-dislocation), from 2014 to 2024. Data on hospitalizations, total approved costs, deaths, and length of hospital stay were analyzed according to year and geographic region. Descriptive statistics were used to calculate totals, means, percentages, and lethality rates.
Results:
A total of 22,304 hospitalizations were recorded during the study period, with a cumulative cost of R$ 25,139,777.12 and 91 in-hospital deaths. The Southeast region accounted for the highest proportion of hospitalizations (39.60%). The overall mean cost per hospitalization was R$ 1,127.14, and the mean length of stay was 6.63 days. The global lethality rate was 0.41%. An increase of 40.44% in the number of hospitalizations was observed between 2014 and 2024. Hospitalization volume remained similar in 2019 and 2020 (1,935 vs. 1,906).
Conclusion:
Surgical treatment of knee dislocation and fracture-dislocation represents a relevant epidemiological and economic burden within the SUS, with increasing procedure volume over time and marked regional concentration.
