EP 541 Creation of Low Cost, Animal Free Demonstration Models for Post Thyroid Surgery Haematoma Evacuation for Teaching Core Surgical Trainees to Manage this Life-Threatening Complication

Aims
To create a quick and interactive model to teach Core Surgical Trainees how to manage a neck haematoma following thyroid surgery. Model that is low cost and is reproducible without using animal or cadaveric products. Create simple instructions, with images for surgical educators to access and recreate the model to improve training across the NHS.
Methods
Creation of models using mainly disposable materials found in the hospital. The model was created using a cardboard urine bottle, pink elasoplast tape, white tape, wooden tongue depressor, Scissors, stapler, suture material (we used expired stock). Haematoma/blood made with Aquacel and optilube. For demonstration a scalpel. Additional materials - fake skin (could use any fabric), clingfilm and red paint.
Results
Two models were made and used for a core surgical teaching session in April 2025. One model for demonstration by the senior registrar; a second model was available for the core surgical trainees to practise on. The session was a success, great feedback from trainees; the only constructive feedback was to have more models.
Conclusions
Fortunately, surgical emergencies/complications such as haematoma following thyroid surgery are rare, but remains a life-threatening emergency, crucial for the team to recognise and manage this promptly and efficiently. Simulation using models is a well-recognised part of surgical training today; however, this often involves animal or cadaveric models which are not only high cost but raise complex ethical considerations. This model was easy to produce, low cost and thus would be widely accessible across hospitals and NHS trusts.
