EP 349 Audit of Updated ERAS Guidelines Followed in Elective Colorectal Surgery in a Teaching Hospital

Aims
To look into current practices for elective colorectal surgery and compare with the updated ERAS guidelines published in June 2025.To look for areas of improvement that are feasible and as learning points for the department.
Methods
4 months of data between June to September 2025 was collected retrospectively and all elective colo-rectal surgeries with the exception of day case benign proctology was included. 10 out of the 23 recommendations from ERAS 2025 guidelines with high grade of evidence and high strength of recommendation with relevance to surgical practise was identified and data collected.
Results
There was a total of 56 surgeries performed electively of which right hemicolectomies were most common (30%) followed by Anterior resections (23%). More than 90% compliance was noted in the 6 categories of Post op nausea and vomiting prophylaxis, Removing NG tube post op, multimodal analgesia, post op enteral nutrition, IV antibiotics and VTE prophylaxis was noted. Mechanical bowel prep was being routinely prescribed for more than 85% of resections which is not recommended by the updated guidelines. All the patients receiving MBP had oral antibiotic compliance. More than 78% of patients had minimally invasive laparoscopic or robotic surgery and 73% of patients had no drain placed post operatively.
Conclusion
There is fair adherence to the ERAS guidelines in our teaching hospital. Recommendations with good evidence should be taken into consideration for good medical practice.
