EP 238 ICG in Assessing Testicular Viability in Torsion Testis: A Scoping Review of Available Evidence and a Pooled Analysis

Background
Testicular torsion is a common surgical emergency in the paediatric age group, requiring prompt surgical intervention to salvage the twisted testis. Scrotal exploration is the best treatment before any investigation to diagnose testicular torsion. The assessment of a twisted testicle during surgery and salvaging the testis can improve quality of life and patient satisfaction. The aim of this study is to review the available evidence in the literature about the use of Indocyanine green in testicular torsion.
Method
In the study, we identified articles in PubMed, Embase, the Cochrane Database, and Google Scholar using search terms for Indocyanine Green (ICG) and testicular torsion. We screened 301 articles with inclusion and exclusion criteria. Six articles were finally included in the study. Thirty-one participants were identified in the study. The primary outcome is to assess the number of orchidectomies and orchidopexies in the study participants. Statistical analysis was done.
Result
Thirty-one study participants underwent ICG to assess testicular viability during scrotal exploration. Twenty-six participants underwent orchidopexy. Five had orchidectomy. The secondary outcomes. Assess the blood flow during the follow-up. Thirteen patients underwent clinical assessment of testicular architecture. Thirteen patients had image-guided follow-up. One patient had poor flow among the 13 patients who had image-guided follow-up.
Conclusion
Indocyanine Green is a useful tool explored across all surgical subspecialties. ICG use in testicular torsion needs further research studies and broader utilisation.
