EP 066 Case Report: The Skeletal Muscle Index Can Serve as an Indicator for Assessing the Effectiveness of Prehabilitation During Neoadjuvant Therapy for Gastric Cancer

Abstract

Purpose

We propose and validate the hypothesis initially put forward by us: the skeletal muscle index (SMI) can serve as an evaluative indicator for pre-rehabilitation efficacy during neoadjuvant chemotherapy for gastric cancer.

Methods

The feasibility of using SMI to evaluate the efficacy of pre-rehabilitation was demonstrated through a case study involving an elderly patient with advanced gastric cancer and multiple comorbid chronic conditions.

Results

The patient demonstrated a significant improvement in SMI following the prehabilitation intervention, with an increase of 4 cm²/m². No myelosuppression occurred during neoadjuvant therapy, and postoperative recovery was uneventful.

Conclusions

SMI can serve as an evaluative indicator for pre-rehabilitation assessment during neoadjuvant therapy in gastric cancer patients. Furthermore, SMI has the potential to be promoted as a standardized assessment tool for other patient populations undergoing chemotherapy and for individuals with chronic conditions associated with sarcopenia. Mobilizing the subjective initiative of patients is a critical component of preoperative rehabilitation.
