Entropy and multiplicity in a spin system: An example demonstrating the correspondence between thermodynamics and statistics

Ashwin Mohan

In this article, we present an illustrative example of a spin system from recent condensed matter research, a spin ice, which can help students appreciate the quantitative correspondence between thermodynamic entropy obtained from macroscopic measurements of specific heat and magnetization, and the entropy obtained from statistical counting of configurational multiplicity in the system.
