Enhancing Psychological Literacy in Mental Health Educators: Integrating Schizophrenia Awareness into Curriculum Ideology and Politics Framework

Objective
This study aims to develop effective pathways for enhancing the professional competence of mental health education teachers, with particular focus on improving their ability to address schizophrenia spectrum disorders and other serious mental health conditions within the Curriculum Ideology and Politics framework.
Subjects and Methods
The study employed a mixed-methods approach with 150 mental health education teachers from 30 Chinese universities. A six-month professional development program was implemented, incorporating specialized training on schizophrenia identification, support strategies, and ideological-political education integration. Assessment tools included the Mental Health Literacy Scale for Educators, Schizophrenia Awareness Inventory, and Teaching Effectiveness Evaluation, with data collected through surveys, interviews, and classroom observations.
Results
Participants demonstrated significant improvements in schizophrenia-related knowledge (t = 8.45, p < 0.01) and intervention skills. The program enhanced teachers' ability to identify early symptoms of schizophrenia (42% improvement) and provide appropriate support (35% increase). Qualitative data revealed better understanding of serious mental health conditions and improved confidence in addressing complex student psychological needs within the ideological-political education context.
Conclusions
The integrated approach effectively enhances mental health educators' competence in addressing serious psychological conditions, particularly schizophrenia spectrum disorders. This study provides valuable insights for developing comprehensive mental health education that combines professional psychological knowledge with ideological-political education principles.
