Enhancing Effect of Pollution on Dry Matter, Nitrogen and Phosphorus Accumulation in Water Hyacinth (Eichhornia Crassipes) in River Ganga at Varanasi

Ajit Srivastava, R. Ambasht, Raju Kumar
Studies were carried out to determine the dry matter production, nitrogen and phosphorus accumulation by Eichhornia crassipes (Mart.) Solms. At unpolluted upstream and at polluted downstream portions of River Ganga at Varanasi. Average net dry matter production at unpolluted site was of 17.58 kg ha-1 d-1 while it increased to 41.08 kg ha-1 d-1 at the polluted site in ten month growth period. Average net nitrogen and phosphorus accumulation was lower at unpolluted site than that of polluted site. Both the sites also showed distinct variation in their physic-chemical characteristics and biomass and nutrient accumulation rates in different month and seasons.
