The integration of artificial intelligence (AI), particularly natural language processing tools like ChatGPT, into academic research and publication processes has shown promise in enhancing scholarly work. However, its practical application remains under-explored, with limited empirical evidence on its efficacy and potential ethical implications. This study aims to investigate the real-world academic applications of ChatGPT, focusing on its benefits in aiding research and publication, and the challenges it presents, including concerns about source reliability and ethical issues. Employing a mixed-methods approach, this study collected both quantitative and qualitative data from academicians. A survey was distributed to gather numerical data on the use and perception of ChatGPT, followed by in-depth interviews to capture detailed experiences and opinions. Academicians reported that ChatGPT significantly aids in idea generation, manuscript preparation, and language refinement. Despite these benefits, there are significant concerns regarding the accuracy of the information provided by ChatGPT and ethical concerns related to its use in academic settings. While ChatGPT is beneficial for various aspects of academic research and publication, it also raises important questions about source validity and the preservation of academic integrity. The findings suggest that while AI tools can enhance academic productivity, they must be used cautiously and supplemented with critical human oversight to mitigate potential risks associated with their use.
