Engineering design: creating systems of systems

John Baker

Abstract

The chapter ‘Engineering design: creating systems of systems’ borrows concepts from systems engineering to examine the key processes and questions to consider when creating new aerospace systems. The engineering design process and the scientific method are contrasted to highlight the importance of stakeholders for engineers. Characteristics of design requirements are introduced, as they are foundational for the design process. The engineering design process is further expanded upon by exploring the V-diagram, a project life cycle model. The modelling process and a few essential modelling considerations are explored. The chapter concludes by introducing the topic of complexity. As complex engineering systems, complexity plays a critical role in the design, fabrication, testing, and operation of all aerospace flight systems.
