Engaging young people in secondary analysis of data from street youth: Learnings from the Youth Engagement in Analysis Programme

Janine Hunter, Lorraine van Blerk

Contributing to methodologies supporting participant analysis, the Youth Engagement in Analysis Programme (YEAP) trialled secondary data use in qualitative analysis (using NVivo) with pupils (aged 16-17) in a Scottish state school. Using extracts on trust from a longitudinal participatory research project involving street children and youth in three African cities, YEAP demonstrated young people can co-produce analysis across geographical and cultural contexts. YEAP contributes insights into street children and youth’s trusting relational networks and suggests novel methods, including a peer “echo chamber” for collaborative co-analysis, promising potential use among primary participants, helping to achieve meaningful engagement across the research process.
