The present literature lacks an endotype- or anatomical site-targeted synthesis of the studies advocating for periostin upregulation in nasal polyps (NPs).
Differences in periostin levels between NP samples from different CRSwNP endotypes, NP and normal controls, NP and nonpolypoidal mucosal samples (MSs) within chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyposis (CRSwNP) patients, and MS from CRSwNP patients and controls were considered as primary outcomes.
Eosinophilic NP (eNP) samples exhibited significantly higher periostin levels than non-eNP, while non-eNP samples were found to be comparable to controls. Comparisons between NP and MS of patients with CRSwNP attributed significantly higher periostin mRNA and protein levels in the former, while the MS of patients with CRSwNP were comparable to controls and CRSsNP. A strong correlation between mRNA and protein periostin measurements was verified.
Periostin is highly associated with eosinophilic CRSwNP and significantly upregulated in mature eNP rather than nonpolypoidal mucosa.
