Endocrine manifestations in celiac disease
Anjali Verma, Shilpi Rani, Pooja AhlawatCeliac disease (CD) is an immune-mediated genetically predisposed disorder marked by inflammation in response to dietary gluten. While CD classically presents with diarrhea, malabsorption, and weight loss, it is now recognized as a multisystem disorder with a wide spectrum of extra-intestinal manifestations. Endocrine manifestations including type 1 diabetes, autoimmune thyroid disease, metabolic bone disease, autoimmune polyglandular syndromes, growth, and pubertal disorders represent an important extra-intestinal spectrum of CD probably due to common genetic predisposition. Recognition of these associations leading to targeted screening of endocrine conditions in CD can facilitate early diagnosis, timely intervention, and improved long-term outcomes.
