Empowering Educators: Utilising AI for Professional Development in Higher Education

Natalie Quinn Walker

Abstract

AI is reshaping and challenging the educational landscape, but educators are not mere bystanders in this transformation. This chapter will explore the significance of AI tools and the pivotal role educators can play in their development. Using AI, educators can create personalised learning platforms, track teaching performance and foster continuous growth. Their active involvement in developing AI learning platforms will ensure they remain ahead of rapid technological advancements, adapting to new teaching methodologies and responding to the evolving needs of student populations. Therefore, higher education requires an investment of time and financial resources in its academic teams, fostering a culture of lifelong learning and an eagerness for new pedagogical innovations and approaches. To address the challenges and further opportunities of AI in professional development, this chapter will explore the critical question: How can AI empower educators to remain relevant and upskill in the fast-changing education environment? By analysing practical guidelines and theories such as connective, self-determination and experiential learning, the impact of these changes will be examined. Therefore, educators need to be re-evaluated to determine the quality of education they can provide and to keep pace with technological changes and demands.
