Employability Skills in the Modern Labor Market: The Role of Internships and the Development of Technical, Leadership, Digital and Language Competencies
Tarek AdhamiThe rapid changes in the global labor market, driven by digital transformation, globalization, technological advancement and artificial intelligence, have significantly changed employers' expectations of university graduates. Academic qualifications alone are no longer sufficient to secure employment, as organizations increasingly seek graduates who possess practical experience and a combination of technical and transferable skills. This paper addresses the importance of internships during university studies and discusses the key skills and competencies required to improve graduate employability in today's competitive labor market through a short review of the literature and related organizations. It highlights internships as an effective bridge between higher education and the workplace by enabling students to apply theoretical knowledge in real organizational settings, gain professional experience, develop workplace confidence and become familiar with organizational culture before graduation. The paper also explores four essential categories of employability skills that are required across different industries: technical skills, leadership and soft skills, computer skills and language skills.
These competencies contribute to improving employee performance, organizational effectiveness, career development and long term employability. Furthermore, the paper emphasizes that preparing students for employment is a shared responsibility among universities, employers, policymakers and students. Higher education institutions should integrate internships and practical learning opportunities into academic programs, while employers should strengthen collaboration with universities to ensure that graduates possess the competencies required by the labor market. At the same time, students should continuously develop their professional skills throughout their university studies. The paper concludes that combining internship experience with the continuous development of technical, leadership, digital and language competencies significantly enhance graduates' readiness for employment and supports sustainable career success in an increasingly dynamic and technology driven labor market. It also highlighted the need to do quantitative studies to cover this topic in the middle east.
