Empathic Leadership in Healthcare Drives Experience and Workforce Stability: Insights From a Leading Healthcare Organization

Helen Riess, Philip Adam Dodd, Marla Arata

Healthcare faces a profound workforce crisis driven by burnout, administrative burden, moral distress, and rapid system-wide change. These forces negatively affect both patient experience and workforce morale. While organizations have invested heavily in technology and workflow redesign, the interpersonal dimension of leadership, particularly empathic leadership, remains underdeveloped and undervalued. This industry insight argues that empathy is not merely a relational nicety but a strategic leadership competency essential to compassionate care and workforce stability. Drawing on neuroscience research demonstrating that empathy is a teachable and measurable skill, and on leadership observations from a large-scale empathy implementation at Sutter Health Gould Medical Group, the article describes how empathic practices appear to strengthen empathic communication between care professionals and with their patients. They also improve psychological safety, and retention. These findings are presented as practice-based insights derived from leaders’ observations of operational trends following an empathy-focused intervention. Integrating empathy into leadership development, organizational culture, and systemic reform is critical. Empathic leadership should be recognized as foundational to resilient healthcare systems, supporting professional fulfillment, mitigating burnout, sustaining high-quality patient care and financial sustainability.
