Emotion and Teacher Identity
Maria ImpedovoAbstract
This chapter explores the role of emotions in the professional life of teachers. Moments of discomfort, tensions and judgements illustrate how teachers and teacher-educators navigate the emotional labyrinth of their work. A metaphor inspired by the myth of Theseus and Ariadne’s red thread is employed to frame negative emotions as both obstacles and potential guides: while such emotions can entrap teachers in repetitive cycles of disconnection, reflectivity functions as a ‘thread’ enabling re-engagement with professional purpose and relational vitality. By interpreting teachers’ anecdotes through these Dialogical Self Theory, it becomes clear that negative emotions, when acknowledged and navigated with care, can serve as catalysts for growth, deeper connection, and renewed meaning in the teaching profession.
