Embedding Sustainability Across the Balanced Scorecard: A Conceptual Framework for Systemic ESG Integration, SDG Implementation, and Greenwash Prevention Without a Fifth Perspective
Mohammed Ibrahim BuhayaDespite mandatory sustainability disclosure regimes such as the CSRD and IFRS S1/S2, a structural gap persists between reported ESG commitments and the internal management control systems that govern organizational behavior. The purpose of this conceptual paper is to develop a framework that embeds ESG indicators within the four original perspectives of the Balanced Scorecard (BSC) in a manner that is strategically coherent, materially grounded, cross-perspectively connected, and resistant to sustainability decoupling. Drawing on Integrated Thinking, value chain sustainability theory, and materiality theory, the paper proposes the Sustainability Embedded BSC (SE-BSC), which operationalizes ESG embedding through three constructs: Materiality Alignment Nodes, Cross-Perspective Sustainability Linkages, and Greenwash Prevention Checkpoints. The study concludes that sustainability decoupling is a structural property of additive scorecard architectures and can be addressed by design rather than by ex-post assurance alone. The originality of the SE-BSC lies not in the goal of integrative embedding, which prior integrative SBSC research shares, but in explicit and auditable constructs that make this goal operational and empirically testable; twelve propositions are advanced for future validation.
