Electrodiagnostic Study in Postmenopausal Women Presented with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Background:
The most prevalent neuropathy entrapment of the upper limbs is carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). It is more frequent in women and causes a major functional handicap to the median nerve as it travels through the carpal tunnel. Hormonal fluctuations have been linked to the development of CTS in postmenopausal women.
Objectives:
The aim is to evaluate the role of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) in patients with CTS and the parameters of nerve conduction study (NCS).
Materials and Methods:
This case-control study was conducted in the unit of neurophysiology at Al-Imam Al-Sadiq Teaching Hospital in Babylon from September 2023 to March 2024. The study includes 110 postmenopausal women diagnosed with CTS and 110 healthy control subjects (postmenopausal women).
Results:
The study results show that 28.2% of CTS patients used HRT (31 patients), while 71.8% did not use HRT, representing 79 patients. There was a significant mean reduction in median nerve latency (ms), a significant mean elevation in median nerve amplitude (μv), and conduction velocity (m/s) for both sensory and motor (right and left hands) among patients with CTS using HRT.
Conclusions:
The study results show that there is a positive correlation between the use of HRT and a decrease in the severity of CTS in postmenopausal women.
