Effects of Yoga and Naturopathy Intervention in Grade II Internal Hemorrhoids with Associated Anal Fissure

UmaHemorrhoids and anal fissures are common benign anorectal disorders often associated with chronic constipation, straining, and sedentary lifestyle habits, significantly affecting the quality of life. The conventional management includes dietary modification, pharmacotherapy, and surgical interventions, which may not always be well tolerated. Yoga and Naturopathy (YN) offer a holistic, nonpharmacological approach targeting both local pathology and underlying lifestyle factors. This case report describes the effects of an integrated YN intervention in a 19-year-old female diagnosed with Grade II internal hemorrhoids associated with an acute posterior anal fissure. The patient presented with rectal bleeding, severe pain during and after defecation, anorectal discomfort, and impaired bowel habits. A supervised 10-day inpatient intervention comprising specific yogic practices, pranayama, mud therapy, hydrotherapy, naturopathic treatments, and structured dietary modification was administered. The outcome measures included symptom assessment using the REALISE score for anal fissure and health-related quality of life, evaluated using the EQ-5D-5 L and EQ-VAS scales. Postintervention assessment demonstrated the complete resolution of rectal bleeding, marked reduction in pain, improved bowel regularity, and significant enhancement in the quality-of-life scores, with no adverse effects reported. The findings suggest that YN interventions may play a beneficial adjunctive role in the management of early-stage hemorrhoids with associated anal fissure by addressing bowel dysfunction, sphincter spasm, and psychosomatic factors. Although limited by its single-case design, this report highlights the potential of integrative approaches as safe, cost-effective, and patient-centered strategies in benign anorectal conditions, warranting further controlled clinical studies.
