Effects of Training on Drivers’ Adoption of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS): A Comparison Between Novice and Experienced Drivers
Shangyi Lei, Shreya Patel, Shiva PooladvandAdvanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) are increasingly used in modern vehicles, but their safety benefits depend on how well drivers understand, trust, and interact with these technologies. This paper reviewed prior research on three ADAS training methods: text-based, video-based, and simulator-based training. The review examined how these approaches influence drivers’ mental models, trust calibration, and system adoption, with attention to differences between novice and experienced drivers. Findings outlined that text-based training improves basic understanding of system functions and limitations, but has limited transfer to real-time driving performance. Video-based training improves comprehension by demonstrating ADAS behavior in realistic scenarios, although it remains passive. Simulator-based training provides the strongest support for skill development by allowing drivers to experience complex situations in controlled environments. Findings showed that effective ADAS adoption requires multimodal training that combines conceptual instruction with experiential practice to support safer and more appropriate driver interaction.
