Effects of Instruction and Setup Method on Straight Ladder Angle During a Construction Task: Preliminary Results

This preliminary study examines barriers to proper straight ladder setup within a simulated construction task. The effects of instruction and setup method on ladder setup angle are investigated. Five experienced construction workers completed ladder setups across four levels of instruction (task-focused, implicit, explicit, retention) and four setup methods (4-to-1, NIOSH App, ladder with built-in outriggers, ladder integrated with bubble levels). Workers completed interviews to assess preferences and perceived barriers to proper setup. Preliminary results suggest explicit instruction and ladders with integrated bubble levels to produce the most accurate setup angle. However, benefits of explicit instruction were not retained in retention trials, and ladders with integrated bubble levels did not align with users’ perceived ease and confidence of use. These results support promising trends needing further investigation.
