Effects of barley and molasses supplementation on fermentation characteristics, nutritive value, and aerobic stability of Phragmites australis silage

This study investigated the effects of ground barley and molasses supplementation on the fermentation characteristics, nutritional value, aerobic stability, and sensory properties of common reed (Phragmites australis) silage. Fresh common reed biomass was ensiled without any additives as the control treatment (GI), while the other treatments consisted of fresh common reed supplemented with 10% barley (GII), 5% molasses (GIII), and a combination of 10% barley and 5% molasses (GIV), all on a dry-matter basis. After 60 days of fermentation, silages were analysed for chemical composition, fiber fractions, digestibility indices, energy values, fermentation parameters, Fleig point, aerobic stability, and sensory quality. Additives significantly affected nutrient composition by increasing crude protein and total carbohydrates while reducing structural fiber fractions. Digestibility and energy-related parameters improved particularly in treatments containing barley. Silage pH decreased from 4.87 in the control group to 4.40 in the barley + molasses treatment, and relative feed value increased from 60.15 to 75.17, reflecting enhanced nutritive value (P
