Effectiveness of Using a Nasofilter Compared with Inspiratory Muscle Training on Pulmonary Function in Cotton Mill Workers

Background:
Cotton mill workers are routinely exposed to airborne cotton dust and chemical particles, placing them at an increased risk of respiratory disorders such as bronchitis, asthma, byssinosis, and other pulmonary impairments. Pulmonary rehabilitation has emerged as an important strategy for managing chronic respiratory dysfunction.
Objectives:
This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of using a Nasofilter (a nasal filter incorporating nanofiber technology) versus inspiratory muscle training (IMT) on pulmonary function, oxygen saturation (SpO 2 ), and functional exercise capacity (6-min walk distance [6MWD]) in cotton mill workers.
Materials and Methods:
A total of 200 eligible cotton mill workers were randomly allocated into two groups of 100 participants each. Group A underwent IMT for 30 min per day, 5 days per week, for 4 weeks, while Group B used Nasofilters continuously during working hours over the same period. Pulmonary function tests, SpO 2 , and 6MWD were assessed before and after the intervention.

Use of Nasofilters provided superior protection against respiratory impairments and was more effective than IMT alone in improving lung function, oxygenation, and functional exercise capacity among cotton mill workers.
