Effectiveness of Telerehabilitation based Endurance and Strength training in patients with COPD: A Narrative Review

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a chronic, irreversible, and progressive lung disease, characterized by persistent airflow limitation attributed to inflammation, excess mucus secretion within the airways, and alveolar wall destruction. Pathological changes associated with COPD include dyspnea, exercise limitation, muscle weakness, and diminished quality of life (QOL). Apart from pulmonary effects, COPD has been known to exert systemic effects on the musculoskeletal system and physical activity, impacting the performance of activities of daily livings. Although endurance exercise capacity and exercise tolerance have been shown to be enhanced by endurance exercise and limb function by resistance exercise (upper extremities specifically), limitations exist for conventional rehabilitation programs such as immobility, lack of access to health services, and transport difficulties. Hence, telerehabilitation has been developed as a viable solution, delivering services through telecommunications and a virtual environment. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of telerehabilitation in a comprehensive strength and endurance training program on the functional capacity and QoL of COPD patients. Data were collected using PubMed, Google Scholar, and ResearchGate by searching articles within established inclusion and exclusion criteria. From the 10 relevant studies identified, the majority demonstrated positive effects in the functional capacity of COPD patients, improving exercise tolerance, walking test distances, and physical performance. QoL of patients with COPD also showed improvement in dimensions such as reduced dyspnea and fatigue and increased well-being.
