Effectiveness and Safety of Karvol® + in Patients with Nasal Congestion Due to Common Cold, Allergic Rhinitis, or Sinusitis: A Prospective, Single-Arm, Real-World Study Using Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs)

Abstract

Background:

Nasal congestion is a frequent complaint in upper respiratory tract infections (URTIs), including the common cold, allergic rhinitis, and sinusitis. Standard therapies such as decongestant sprays, antihistamines, and corticosteroids are effective but can be limited by side effects or delayed onset of benefit. Karvol ® +, which contains menthol, camphor, eucalyptus oil, chlorothymol, and terpineol, may offer complementary antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and mucolytic actions that support symptomatic relief.

Materials and Methods:

A prospective, single-arm study enrolled 250 adults aged 18–65 years with nasal congestion due to URTIs. Participants used Karvol ® + primarily via steam inhalation three times daily and, if needed, applied capsule contents on a handkerchief, pillow, or as per product labeling for 5 days. Assessments included Total Nasal Symptom Score (TNSS), individual symptom scores, time to onset of relief, patient satisfaction, and adverse events (AEs).

Results:

TNSS improved markedly, showing a 94% reduction ( P < 0.05) by Day 5. Individual symptoms such as nasal congestion, rhinorrhea, sneezing, itching, and sleep disturbance decreased by more than 90% ( P < 0.05). Most patients (about 92%) reported noticeable relief within 30 min of administration. All participants rated their experience as “satisfied” or “very satisfied” by the end of the study. In those with cough, symptom severity reduced by 77% ( P < 0.05), while “heaviness in head” reduced by 88.21% ( P < 0.05). Karvol ® + was well tolerated, with only mild AEs.

Conclusion:

Karvol ® + provided fast and meaningful relief from nasal congestion and associated URTI symptoms with minimal side effects.
