Effect of Quinalphos on Oxygen Consumption by Freshwater Guppy Fish

Pratibha B. Khapre, Purvaja R. Chalse

Quinalphos is commonly used organophosphate pesticide. Present work was carried out to assess the effect of quinalphos on the rate of oxygen consumption in freshwater guppy fish, Gambusia affinis. For this purpose,, healthy fishes were exposed to sub lethal concentration of quinalphos (0.0049 ppm)for 6, 12 and 18 days. Simultaneously control group (without exposure to quinalphos) was also maintained. The oxygen consumption was estimated by Winkler's method. The rate of oxygen consumption in experimental group after the exposure to quinalphos showed significant decrease, after every 6 days as compared to control group. The rate of oxygen consumption decreased with increasing exposure period. Hence quinalphos found toxic to the economically important Gambusia affinis.
