Effect of Positive and Negative Evaluations on Perseverance on a Simple Task

Summary .–24 men and 24 women were given either positive, negative, or no evaluation of their performance on a simple task. A negative evaluation led to a greater tendency to continue to perform than either of the two other evaluations. The theoretical implications of these results are discussed.
