Effect of Municipal solid Waste Disposal on Ground Water Quality Jalna City, Maharashtra, India.
Hrushita Davane, Kshama KhobragadeThe present study was undertaken to evaluate impact of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) dumping site (Jalna) on groundwater quality of the surrounding area. Groundwater samples were taken in pre-monsoon as well as post-monsoon seasons of 2023–2024. The collected samples were analysed for physico-chemical parameters such as turbidity, Electrical conductivity (EC), Total dissolved solids (TDS), pH, Total hardness, Sodium (Na+), Potassium (K+), Chloride (Cl-), Nitrate (NO3-), and Sulphate (SO32-) following standard analytical methods. The results showed high concentrations of EC, TDS, turbidity, nitrate, sodium, potassium, and chloride in groundwater samples collected from the areas which were close to the municipal solid waste dumping site, indicating leachate infiltration resulting into groundwater contamination. Thus, the Solid Waste dumping site adversely affected the quality of surrounding groundwater through landfill leachate infiltration. There is an urgent need for proper solid waste management practices in this area.
