Effect of Multi-walled Carbon Nano Tube on Bio-concrete
Muyideen Abdulkareem, Ahmed MohammedConcrete is a crucial construction material in the world. However, concrete structures are exposed to overloading harsh environmental conditions. The usage of mineral and chemical admixtures has been deemed too expensive and unfriendly to the environment. Thus, this research is carried out to evaluate the effects of multi-walled carbon nano tube (MWCNT) on concrete. In this study, bacillus subtilis bacteria is applied to produce bio-concrete, thereafter, MWCNT is incorporated into the bio-concrete. By using a water-cement ratio of 0.55, MWCNT portions of 0.05%, 0.10%, 0.15%, and 0.20% weight of cement were added to the bio-concrete. The tests evaluated after 28 days were workability, water absorption and compressive tests. The results showed that MWCNT decreased workability of the bio-concrete. However, the optimum amount of MWCNT was 0.05% that achieved 21% decrease in porosity and 11% increase in compressive strength compared to the bio-concrete.
