Educational impact of virtual and light microscopy in undergraduate parasitology: a comparative cross-sectional study

ABSTRACT

Light microscopy (LM) is traditionally used to teach practical parasitology to undergraduate medical students. LM-based instruction is expensive and demanding, needing well-maintained microscopes, quality slides, and extensive faculty supervision, which is hard to manage in big classes or poor settings. Virtual microscopy (VM) offers a scalable, accessible alternative. This study aimed to determine the level of student satisfaction with VM and to compare the effectiveness of VM versus LM in enhancing academic performance among undergraduate medical students. A comparative intervention study was conducted among 160 randomly selected second-year medical students enrolled in the Parasitology practical course. Participants received practical instruction either by using conventional light microscopes (LM group) or virtual microscope (VM group). Data were collected through a structured questionnaire assessing student satisfaction (Likert-scale and open-ended responses) and by comparing end-of-module practical examination scores. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and inferential tests, while qualitative feedback was thematically analyzed. The VM group reported high overall satisfaction (77.4%), particularly regarding accessibility, image quality, and ease of use. Cronbach’s alpha (0.948) indicated excellent internal consistency of the satisfaction scale. Students rated VM’s educational usefulness highest (mean 4.2), followed by convenience and interface design (mean 4.1). The VM group achieved significantly higher exam scores than the LM group ( P < 0.001), demonstrating improved learning outcomes. Qualitative feedback revealed themes of enhanced accessibility, improved visualization, and greater learner engagement, though some noted minor technical issues. Virtual microscopy (VM) is an effective and scalable alternative to traditional methods in parasitology education. The results demonstrate success at Kirkpatrick’s Levels 1 and 2, indicating high learner satisfaction and measurable improvement in learning outcomes. Crucially, VM offers a cost-effective solution, making it especially valuable for medical schools with limited resources.
