EduCase: A Systematic Framework for Developing Educational Case Studies in Construction and Engineering Education

Despite the critical role of educational case studies in construction and engineering education (CEE), there is a lack of systematic frameworks for developing effective educational case studies. This study introduces the educational case study development (EduCase) framework, a structured, multiphase approach for developing educational case studies through iterative, multicohort testing and refinement. The framework guides instructors through four integrated phases: case study creation, pilot implementation, assessment, and systematic refinement cycles. When a case study is created and pilot tested, student assessment data from each implementation cycle inform targeted refinements, enabling continuous improvement until the case study consistently achieves intended learning objectives (LOs). To test the framework, a case study was developed on the topic of target value design through iterative testing with 207 students across multiple cohorts and disciplines. Results demonstrated that the framework produces case studies that significantly improve cognitive engagement, enhance student perceptions including curiosity and confidence, and achieve strong learning outcomes. This study provides a framework for developing pedagogically sound case studies in CEE, offering a structured approach to integrating theory and practice in engineering education.
