Driving Process Agility and Innovation for Advanced Packaging: Role of Universal Carriers for Singulated Die

Jerry Broz, Victoria Tran, Raj Varma

Innovation in advanced semiconductor packaging is influenced by rapid developments and consumer demands within the 5G, AI, IoT, and automotive sectors.  To meet these accelerated technology timelines, IDMs and OSATs must enable high levels of process flexibility as well as rapid test-strategy implementation. With advanced packaging architectures such as chiplets, 2.5D/3D integration, and heterogeneous assembly being quickly adopted, the ability to efficiently transition between different device formfactors and manufacturing processes has become an important capability to keep pace with the industry.

Universal and pocketless device carriers and trays for singulated die are emerging as key enablers for this transformation. Unlike legacy device transport hardware, which often require long-fabrication lead times, customized pockets, and limit device access, pocketless micro-textured carriers provide universally scalable platforms capable of handling a wide range of die sizes and formfactors. Compatibility with existing tooling allows IDMs and OSATs to quickly adapt to new device designs and process requirements without costly retooling or workflow disruptions.

Universal carriers withstand the rigors of high-volume test and assembly, maintaining device integrity and cleanliness through repeated handling and environmental exposure. By minimizing risks of damage, contamination and mechanical stress, these carriers preserve device yield and reliability—essential metrics for advanced packaging of multiple semiconductor IP.

Design flexibility enables reuse across multiple process steps and device generations, well aligning with industry roadmaps.  Implementation of universal carriers also reduces single-use materials to simplify inventory management as well as support sustainability goals.

This presentation will detail and discuss how universal carrier technology is a critical enabler for accelerating the adoption of advanced packaging strategies, enabling process agility, and supporting the next wave of semiconductor innovation.
