Domperidone-induced galactorrhoea

Galactorrhoea, characterized by the secretion of milky discharge from the breast, is commonly associated with hyperprolactinemia. Dopamine plays a crucial role in inhibiting prolactin secretion, and drugs that block dopamine receptors, such as domperidone, can disrupt this balance, leading to increased prolactin levels and subsequent galactorrhoea. Although domperidone is known to increase milk production in nursing women, the studies of this effect in nonlactating women are limited. This case report presents a 37-year-old woman who developed galactorrhoea following domperidone treatment for acute severe gastritis. Laboratory investigations revealed significantly elevated serum prolactin levels, normalized after discontinuation of the medication. The symptoms also resolved after withdrawal of domperidone, confirming a drug-induced adverse reaction. Domperidone-induced hyperprolactinemia warrants clinical attention because of potential complications such as menstrual irregularities, infertility, and osteoporosis. This report underscores the importance of pharmacovigilance and timely recognition of drug-associated endocrine effects to prevent complications.
