ABSTRACT

Objective

To assess interobserver reliability of transorbital sonographic measurements of optic nerve and optic nerve sheath diameters (OND and ONSD) between two operators having differing levels of experience in ocular ultrasonography.

Methodology

Thirty healthy adult volunteers, aged between 21 and 38 years, were assessed by two investigators using transorbital ultrasound. Intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC) and Bland‐Altman plots were applied for statistical analysis. A comparison of these parameters was also done between both sexes using a t ‐test.

Results

ICC values for OND measurements were 0.47 (right eye), 0.48 (left eye) while they were 0.76 and 0.78 for ONSD respectively. Both measurements were significantly different between both sexes for both eyes.

Conclusion

The transorbital ultrasonographic measurement of ONSD was found to have moderate to good interobserver reliability and was more consistent than OND measurement between operators with differing levels of experience.
