District Leaders’ Experience Implementing Tier 1 PBIS to Include Students With ESN

Georgia L. McKown

This Perspectives article focuses on the journey of a rural school district in the southeastern United States as they reflect on adapting their Tier 1 PBIS practices to be inclusive of all students, including those with extensive support needs. This article includes statements and reflections from a conversation between a state-wide behavior coach and school district leaders for special education and behavior about implementation progress and lessons learned. In addition, this article includes suggestions for other practitioners, researchers, and implementers that have grown out of these experiences, with a focus on inclusivity in Tier 1 PBIS. Although there is a growing body of research on inclusion in Tier 1 supports, the aim of this article is to provide vital reflections and feedback about how this functions in practice in the rural context.
