Dissolved N2O-based quantification methodology
Shuting Wang, Mikkel Holmen Andersen, Borja Valverde-Pérez, Haoran DuanSummary
This chapter presents a practical guidance on dissolved nitrous oxide (N2O) sensor usage and corresponding methodology for quantifying N2O emissions in wastewater treatment. Compared with the traditional gas-based monitoring method, dissolved N2O sensors offer a potentially more cost-effective alternative by measuring N2O concentrations directly in the liquid phase and allowing flexible monitoring across different bioreactor zones. The chapter outlines a standardized protocol for soluble N2O monitoring in fine-bubble aeration systems, including sensor principles and deployment, volumetric mass-transfer coefficient (kLa) and N2O emission calculation approaches, and procedures for sensor calibration, maintenance, and troubleshooting to ensure reliable and comparable N2O emission estimates in wastewater treatment plants. Calculation tools developed in both Python and Excel are provided and illustrated to facilitate practical application by users with different levels of technical expertise. With the guidance provided in this chapter, users with limited prior experience can understand how to perform dissolved N2O-based emission quantification in wastewater treatment systems.
