Direct current technology for hybrid AC/DC grids

This paper makes the case for High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) technology as the key enabler for the future transmission system, and one that brings more to the table than pure power transmission. HVDC connects to the alternating current (AC) power system using power electronic converters that transform electricity from AC to direct current (DC). HVDC is not new; over 100 systems operate globally. Typical applications include long-distance, high-power transmission; underground or undersea connections; and connecting different independent power systems.
