Digital Transformation 2.0: Integrating AI and Empowering People for Sustainable Growth in the Future of Work

Corinne Murray, A. Sophie Wade

The digital era has reached a new inflection point, accelerated by artificial intelligence (AI) and organizations’ need to adapt to dynamic, technology-driven conditions. This chapter examines the legacy of Digital Transformation 1.0—highlighting failures and their causes—and defines the imperatives of AI-infused Digital Transformation 2.0. Drawing from relevant case studies, research, and executive interviews, it emphasizes the critical shift from episodic digitization to sustained AI-embedded digitalization. Leaders must enable systems-level transformation across people, process, and technology while aligning cultural, ethical, and operational domains. Digital Transformation 2.0 demands coordinated iterative design over monolithic strategy, requiring organizations to reimagine work as a fluid mix of tasks rather than fixed roles. Human–AI collaboration is a new reality that depends on psychological safety, AI literacy, and digital dexterity across the blended human-AI workforce. Successful transformation hinges on new leadership behaviors that elevate trust, agency, and adaptability while modeling and encouraging the use of new tools. The piece explores decentralized workforce models, the urgency of building AI-ready cultures, and a new social contract. It examines how agile frameworks, value mapping, and upskilling efforts create coherence amid complexity, making change tangible and participatory. The Future of Work is framed not as a fixed destination, but as a dynamic system requiring deliberate, ongoing leadership to combine machine capabilities with uniquely human capabilities. Ultimately, this work calls for defining or reframing organizational purpose and progress: AI can multiply what we value, but it is up to us to define what we value—and how we lead with it.
