Digital Literacy and Social Media Engagement Among Nigerian University Library Personnel
Olayinka Makinde, Ibukunoluwa OyekaleThis study focused on social media use awareness, digital literacy skills, and the use of social media by university library personnel in six states of Nigeria. A survey research design with a quantitative approach was deployed. A semi-structured questionnaire was used to collect data. Responses to the questionnaire were received from 371 paraprofessional and professional academic librarians. The social learning theory and digital literacy framework, with 9 Cs, underpinned the study. Data were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The findings revealed that awareness of social media use and digital literacy skills jointly predicted social media use. Concerning social media use awareness indicators, only reproducing knowledge was statistically significant. For digital literacy skills indicators, communication, collaboration, critical thinking, creativity, character and connectedness have a considerable influence on the use of social media. The study recommends implementing comprehensive training programmes that address awareness and digital literacy skills to maximise the effective use of social media for library services.
