Did I miss the technology ‘revolution’?1

Des Freedman

Throughout history, theorists have regularly turned to the language of revolution in order to process enormous and rapid processes of technological change. Just as we earlier had the Gutenberg revolution, the Industrial Revolution, the transistor revolution and the PC revolution, we are apparently in the throes of a biotech revolution, a quantum 3D printing revolution, a nanotechnology revolution and of course, an AI revolution that are said to be changing the underlying power relations of contemporary capitalism. This commentary places capitalism’s addiction to accumulation and transformation in the light of claims about a digital ‘revolution’.
