Development and Validation of Interactive Multimedia Learning Media for Basic Violin Instruction

The integration of interactive multimedia technology in violin instruction represents a critical advancement in addressing traditional pedagogical limitations, yet empirically validated systems specifically designed for string instrument education remain scarce. This study aimed to develop and validate interactive multimedia learning media for basic violin instruction and evaluate its effectiveness compared to conventional teaching methods. A Research and Development methodology based on Borg and Gall’s framework was employed, involving systematic development using Sibelius software integration, expert validation by media, content, and language specialists, as well as empirical testing with twenty-five undergraduate students at Universitas Negeri Padang. The developed interactive media demonstrated significantly superior learning outcomes compared to conventional instruction (89.63% vs. 71.87% validity percentage, t = 10.92, p < 0.001), with comprehensive validation scores ranging from 87.5% to 93.75% across expert categories. Expert validation confirmed technical quality, pedagogical effectiveness, and communication clarity, while student evaluation revealed enhanced motivation, comprehension, and technique application. The findings support Mayer’s cognitive theory of multimedia learning in specialized motor skill contexts, demonstrating that synchronized visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learning modalities significantly enhance violin instruction effectiveness. This research contributes empirically validated design principles for interactive music education technology and provides a replicable framework for developing comprehensive multimedia learning systems that address accessibility challenges in specialized instrumental instruction while maintaining pedagogical rigor.
