Determination of Managerial Competence Levels and Training Requirements of New Nurse Managers for Role Transition: Empirical Research Quantitative
Miray Aksu, Belgin Varol, Emine Özer KüçükABSTRACT
Aim
The aim of this study was to identify managerial competencies and training needs of new nurse managers to improve their role transitions and inform the design of structured training programmes. Nurse managers significantly influence patient outcomes and organisational effectiveness. However, they are often appointed based on clinical expertise rather than managerial skills, creating challenges in leadership roles.
Design
A descriptive cross‐sectional study design was used.
Methods
Data were collected from 185 new nurse managers using an online survey that assessed various domains of managerial competencies, including unit management, personnel management and care management.
Results
New nurse managers demonstrated high overall managerial competency scores. However, most participants reported limited formal managerial training before their appointments. Structured training programmes are essential for effectively developing managerial competencies in new nurse managers. Orientation and ongoing training programmes, including mentoring and coaching by experienced nurse managers and academic staff, will facilitate smoother role transitions and improve organisational outcomes.
