Determination of Hemodynamic Changes in Normotensive Patients Undergoing Dental Extraction

Background:
Dental extraction is a fearful procedure accompanied using vasoconstrictor agents within the content of the local anesthesia (LA) solution. These factors may precipitate hemodynamic changes that may affect the patient’s health.
Objectives:
Investigating the changes in blood pressure and heart rate before and after the LA injection, and after finishing the dental extraction.
Materials and Methods:
The subjects included in this study were healthy males and females attending the clinic for dental extraction. Controlled and uncontrolled hypertensive patients were excluded. The clinical work started by anesthetizing the affected tooth with LA and then proceeded with dental extraction. The blood pressure and heart rate were recorded for the patients at 3 time points; first: before any dental procedure, second: after LA injection; and third: after completing the dental extraction.
Results:
A total of 93 patients (45 males and 48 females) were included in this study. The patient’s age was ranging between (15 and 69) years old. The systolic blood pressure showed a significant increase, especially after LA injection, male patients showed a more apparent effect. The diastolic pressure showed no significant changes. The pulse rate showed no significant changes throughout the procedure; however, there was significant increase after LA injection, especially for male patients.
Conclusion:
The systolic blood pressure and heart rate elevated during dental extraction, especially after LA injection but it remains within the acceptable clinical range.
