Isoquinoline-1,3-dione (IQD) possesses a chemical structure similar to that of isatin, which has been the building block for acceptor units applied in high-performance conjugated polymers. Herein, we designed and synthesized an electron-deficient building block, dibenzo[b,f][1,8]naphthyridin-5(6H)-one (DBPD), and three corresponding polymers, PDBPD-TVT, PDBPD-BTBz, and PDBPD-BTBzF. Owing to the planar backbone of DBPD, the dihedral angles between DBPD and adjacent donor were neglectable. All these three conjugated polymers showed hole transport properties in their field–effect transistors. Their hole mobilities (μh) could reach 0.24 cm2 V–1 s–1 for PDBPD-TVT, 0.35 cm2 V–1 s–1 for PDBPD-BTBz, and 0.06 cm2 V–1 s–1 for PDBPD-BTBzF. All three polymers showed uniform films caused by planar backbones. The GIXRD test revealed that the polymer mainchains of PDBPD-TVT, PDBPD-BTBz, and PDBPD-BTBzF films adopted edge-on orientation. Our work demonstrates that the DBPD unit is a building block with great potential for achieving high-performance conjugated polymers.
