DEI Initiatives Are Curb-Cut Effects That Benefit Everyone

Heavenlei A. Thomas, Mikki R. Hebl, Hannah J. Kim, Linnea C. Ng

Abstract

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives have recently been politicized and reframed as harmful or discriminatory. This paper challenges such misconceptions by clarifying the purpose and expansiveness of DEI efforts, arguing that they are “curb-cut effects” that create broad societal and organizational benefits without threatening privileged groups. Drawing on historical and contemporary examples, we highlight how DEI initiatives improve access, foster belonging, and enhance opportunities for everyone, not just marginalized populations. We conclude with a call to resist the linguistic hijacking of DEI, sustain commitment to DEI principles, and recognize its role in creating equitable organizations.
